The History of Q-beh
Built in late 19th century, it was a part a mansion of industrialist Kichibe Murai called “King of cigarettes”. Land at the time was four times larger than the current. He diversified business and formed a conglomerate, however, he had to reduce the business under the influence of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (Black Tuesday) and relinquish his property.
The building is owned by the current person from 1956, and set up as Ryokan Kawatarou named by a novelist Ashihei Hino. The Okami-san (the manageress) was a caring person and Ryokan Kawatarou was beloved by famous actors and actresses such as Hisaya Morishige, Yujiro Ishihara, Sayuri Yoshinaga, Hideki Takahashi, Mitsuko Baisho.
After 50 years, innumerable guests stayed Ryokan Kawatarou. However, it was decided to make a new start as Gion Ryokan Q-beh. Even now, the features of the original building remain in many places such as the main gate, fence, entrance, lanterns and stone statue. Especially the observation room on the second which the people mentioned above were fond of. Please relax and take your time in the room.
